Well, here we are at the beginning of the new year. We're 13 days after the winter solstice, and I can already feel the days getting longer! Ok, it's only a few minutes, but I can especially see it in the mornings. Damn, the sun didn't seem to be coming up until after 8:00, but now I'm noticing dim daylight at a little after 7:30. So I'm examining my plants carefully as I water them to see who's starting to grow. And I'm excited to say - TA-DA! - Hoya lambii has a new vine starting!! I have a photo of it at the left. I just got this one from Liddle this last summer. It rooted pretty quick, but yu'll notice one of the leaves is cut almost in half. It put on one leaf for me and quit growing. But what I did was cut the tip off with a small partial leaf and root it in with the mother plant (you can kind of see it at the bottom of the photo...) The new growth isn't what you see in the middle of the plant (that's wher I cut that other one off in the fall),. but it's under those big leaves. I'm very excited because this has probably been a "dream" Hoya that has been on my wish list for years. I'll be anxious to see how much it grows for me this year...
At the right is my H. carnosa 'Krimson Queen' - it keeps getting these leaves that start out pink (like in the lower left photo) then turn white (as at the below right...)
This one has been a continuous grower for me, for the most part. It just slows down in winter. My other variegated carnosa, 'Krimson Princess', refused to put on much of any new variegated growth. Over the last 3 years I've had it, I've probably taken two dozen pots full of all green growth off of it I've either sold or given away. I was tired of fighting it, so I took cuttings of variegated only growth and tossed the big plant.
My plan is to post back here every day or so as I find new growth on plants. So stay tuned!
